He scrubbed at his face with the heel of his hand, trying to calm himself.

"Don't be silly," he said with a faint laugh. "Did you think I'd forget after all this time? You changed my life. You were the best thing to..." He started to become aware of the stares they were receiving. He had something of a reputation, now. At least among some folks. He was the reclusive drunk that seemed to keep rather nice apartments despite having no income.

"..best thing to happen to me..." he finished lamely, his smile growing strained.
